The Heated Nip Roll is one of the most important rollers in thermoset prepreg production. Positioned after the resin coating and metering stages, it creates a precisely controlled nip where heat and pressure are applied simultaneously to laminate reinforcement fibers with resin films or coated carrier films.
During hot melt prepreg manufacturing, epoxy resin is first coated onto a release film through the coating and metering system. The resin-coated film then enters the heated nip section together with carbon fiber, glass fiber, or aramid fiber reinforcement. The Heated Nip Roll maintains an optimized processing temperature while applying uniform pressure across the entire web width. This enables the resin to flow evenly into the fiber architecture, improving impregnation quality and ensuring stable resin content.
Compared with conventional pressure rollers, a Heated Nip Roll provides additional thermal energy that lowers resin viscosity during lamination. This results in improved resin penetration, reduced air entrapment, better fiber wet-out, and more consistent laminate thickness.
