A bow roll is a specially engineered roll with a slight curved or bowed profile, used to apply a controlled lateral spreading effect to a moving web. It is widely used in paper machines and converting lines to eliminate wrinkles, improve web flatness, and maintain proper web alignment.
In modern paper production, stable web handling is just as important as forming, pressing, drying, and finishing. As paper machines run at higher speeds and wider widths, the paper web becomes more sensitive to wrinkles, edge folds, bagginess, and tracking instability. Even small web-handling problems can cause paper breaks, coating defects, winding issues, and reduced machine efficiency.
To solve these problems, paper machines often use a Bow Roll, also known as a Spreader Roll. This specialized roll is designed to spread the paper web, felt, or fabric across its width and maintain a flat, stable running profile. Although it may appear simple, the bow roll plays a major role in machine runnability, web quality, and production reliability.
Unlike a standard straight roll, the bow roll creates a spreading action because its curved geometry causes the web to travel slightly outward from the center toward both edges. This helps open the sheet, remove folds, and stabilize the material before it enters the next machine section.

1. Eliminating Wrinkles and Edge Folds
One of the most important functions of a bow roll is to remove wrinkles, creases, and edge folds from the moving paper web or fabric. This is especially important in sections where the web is prone to bagginess or uneven tension.
2. Improving Web Flatness
A bow roll helps spread the web evenly across its full width, creating a flatter and more stable sheet profile. Better flatness improves the performance of downstream processes such as coating, calendering, printing, and winding.
3. Stabilizing Web Tracking
By reducing lateral instability and improving tension distribution, the bow roll helps keep the web running in the correct position. This reduces the risk of web wandering, misalignment, and sheet breaks.
4. Enhancing Felt and Fabric Running
In addition to paper webs, bow rolls are also widely used for press felts and dryer fabrics. Proper fabric spreading reduces edge wear, improves alignment, and supports stable machine clothing performance.
